James visits Basel to learn expansion microscopy
James recently spent 3 weeks at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, visiting Ben Engel’s group. The Engel lab uses cryo-electron tomography, expansion microscopy and other techniques to explore the molecular architecture of the cell, including the pyrenoids of Chlamydomonas and diatoms. During the visit, James worked with Nikolai Klena and Emily Koke on expansion microscopy of algae, including some samples collected from the Wiese river in Basel! There was even time for a sampling trip to Lac Bleu near Sion as part of a new sampling venture with the Alpine and Polar Environmental Research Centre (ALPOLE).
Many thanks to Ben, Philippe, Nik, Emily and everyone in the Engel lab for being such welcoming hosts.
